"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." — Dr. Seuss
Literacy
Our program consists of a Balanced Literacy approach. Throughout each day your child is taking part in a variety of modeled, shared, guided and independent reading activities. The children have opportunities to work independently, with partners, in small groups with a teacher or in a whole-group setting to explore language.
As students are exposed to print in many contexts, written and read aloud, they gain experience and confidence in understanding the many concepts involved in seeing themselves as and becoming readers. Our focus at the beginning of the year is recognition of letters and sounds. We work towards putting sounds together to create rhymes in word families and identify and use high-frequency sight words such as the, a, to etc. in our reading and writing.
Each week, we invite students to write a journal entry or complete a reading response related to a book we have read together. They are expected to draw first and then use their knowledge of letters and sounds to print a message about their picture. This enables them to share their own ideas and experiences or make connections to a text. It also allows for the educators to assess for gaps in reading comprehension in order to work with students to understand the stories and information from the books. Your child's development is shared with you throughout the year when report cards go home and when you come in for parent/teacher conferences.
Also, by reviewing the red Shared Reading Folders each week with your child, you are assisting in the process of him/her developing important skills to become a fluent reader. Reading and talking about books at home enables your child to become confident and excited about language and that is something that he/she will need all throughout their schooling journey. You will be amazed at their growing abilities as readers and writers as they progress throughout the two-year Kindergarten program. Thanks for partnering with us this year to help your child develop a love for books and language!
